Servus! ;)

According to this article, http://science.orf.at/stories/1703039/, Austrian German is under threat from “Bundesdeutsch” i.e. German German.

I was wondering if any Austrian members of the forum had noticed this trend?

Regards

If true, that would be a huge shame. I lived in Austria for a while and love the sound of Austrian German. I can't imagine that Austrian German is on the way out the door.

Cheers to Austrian German,
Yama

I vaguely remember reading an article a few months ago about a similar issue in Bavaria – a school had banned pupils from saying ‘Hallo’ instead of ‘Grüß Gott’ or something? Did anyone else see that?

Hey HeidrunKollider,

I'm not sure if this is the article you saw, since it's more than a few months old, but maybe it's along the same lines, since it talks about Grüß Gott and Tschüss:

This is kind of the opposite of what DrDrDrMr was talking about, though, right? Interesting...

Cheers,
Yama

Hi yakyuyama/HeidrunKollider,

Thanks for the replies.

Both articles seem to suggest that the southerners (Austria & Bavaria) are concerned about the influence of ‘northern’ German.
