Hey fredbär,

Thanks for your latest link.

Several of those words, like grand slam, mixed martial arts, pescetarian, and pencil skirt don't seem new at all to me, whereas I can't say I'd ever seen some of the other words on the list, like ridic, textonym, and roentgenium. Still others, like J-pop and X factor, although not entirely new, do seem relatively new to me compared to many of the others.

I wonder how the publishers decide what words to add and when to add them.

Cheers,
Yama

Yes, it does seem an odd mix of familiar and unheard of :)

On reading the website a little more closely, it seems that the list includes both new and modified entries,

e.g. genius is included on the list because they’ve updated the entry to show its use as an adjective. (http://www.collinsdictionary.com/submission/4069/genius)

I agree with Yama and fredbär that quite a few of the words on that list should have either been added long ago, since they're not (that) new, or should not have been added, because they are too "unheard of." How, for instance, is Swiss Army knife a new word? And why put a fairly obscure scientific word like roentgenium on such a list? Hmmmmm...

Take it easy,
