This is slightly off-topic (but not really)...
Roshambo (as it's also called) is used to decide tons of things in Japan.
The craziest incident I ever experienced with regard to roshambo in Japan was one time when my baseball team ended up winning a game because of it. The game was actually tied (after regulation), and we couldn't keep playing because of a time limit. There had to be a winner, however, since the game was part of a tournament and the winner advanced to the next round (in another town).
Thus, we proceeded to play a best-of-nine game of roshambo, since there were nine players on each team, with the first batter from each team (according to the lineup) battling it out first. We then went down the order until a team had won five times. We swept, 5-0.
Only in Japan.
