Hey Gast,

I suppose some more options are:

refill pouch

or simply

refill

Hi yakyuyama,

I wanna be somewhat nit-picking .

'Nachfüllpackung' is a generic term and so is refill pack(s) / package(s)

A refill pouch is, well ... a pouch - a special kind of package.

And refill, well .... when I sit in a cafe and ask for a refill, I won't get a Nachfüllbeutel, will I ?

What do you think ?

Hey folletto,

I agree that "Nachfüllpackung" is a pretty generic term.

Nevertheless, check out this scenario:

You go to a store to buy more soap for your soap container. You don't want to buy the container again and you don't know what kind of package the soap (by itself) comes in.

In that case, you'd probably ask a salesperson for a (generic) "Nachfüllpackung," right? If the package happens to be in the form of a pouch, however, you would not get a refill "pack" or "package" but rather a refill "pouch." That's why "refill (fill in the blank)" is, in my opinion, still an acceptable translation for Nachfüllpackung, depending on the context.

As for the word "refill," well, that word is certainly not only used in the cafe-type situation you mentioned. Judging by the picture I included a link to, I'd say that "refill" is an acceptable translation for Nachfüllpackung, too.

Cheers,
Yama

Hi yakyuyama,

I am sorry but I beg to differ.

With your input you offered rather an explanation than a translation, right?

A translator's mission is to find a translation and not an interpretation. Ssssssorry again, I don't wanna pick a quarrel. :-)

Have a nice day and

Hey folletto,

This forum is certainly a place for discussing things and sharing opinions, so there's no harm in having a healthy disagreement.

I guess we can let Gast be the judge. 8-)

Cheers,
Yama

Hi @ all,

I think you can look at it both ways - if a translation is required for a client, he/she won't normally be interested in the explanation - unless it is something which does not translate, such as school grading systems, etc., in which case explanatory footnotes can be used.

A forum, however, I think it's also there for trying out different possibilities - asking the community, as well as using it as a sounding board - since while there is such a thing as a correct translation, its not maths (even if it may seem like rocket science at times  ), so a kind of "Spielwiese" is often useful for reasoning out things that aren't to be found in the dictionary.

Hello everyone,

to get back to the topic of refill - Could a "refill" by itself refer more to the content of whatever receptacle is meant here?
Liquid soap, for instance, comes in a refill pack, but if I want my glass refilled, I will ask for just a refill.

Now you've got me going - away to refill my coffee cup!

Cheers
