Hallo,

I thought, like PM2 said, it's the "1000-yard stare," but I guess it can also be called the 2000-yard stare. Also, I don't think the term refers to any painting or picture in particular, but rather to soldiers (at least originally) who stare off far into the distance in an oblivious-to-the-world, shell-shocked state of mind. However, I think Linguistin made a good suggestion with "desillusioniertes In-die-Ferne-Starren".

Hallo PM2,

“It's the stare all combat veterans get after prolonged trips into the boonies and combat, and is usually related to extreme consciousness during the most devastating of experiences, Today it has been better defined as PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress [Disorder]”

Quelle: http://www.3rdmarines.net/thousand_yard_stare.htm

PTSD = posttraumatisches Stresssyndrom

Hey all,

I'm no doctor, but I don't believe PTSD can be equated with the thousand-yard stare.

The thousand-yard stare has to do with the look on someone's face, whereas PTSD is, as the name says, a disorder.

The thousand-tard stare may perhaps be caused by PTSD, but I hesitate to think it equals PTSD.

Cheers,
Yama

Hi yakyuyama,

You're right - they're not equivalent - the article I quoted was not very precise - thousand-yard stare is at best a symptom &/or indicator of PTSD.

(Possibly) better descriptions here; http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=1000%20yard%20stare

Sorry if my post was misleading.

Regards,

fredbär
