Google Translate says - Wo ist Er dann
My Pimsleur tape says - Wo ist Er denn
My German wife says - You can use both

Can anybody tell me which is correct and why?

Jason

Hi Jason,

IMO, both of these are of common usage, but have slightly different meanings:

"Wo ist er dann" implies: if the person you are looking for is not a certain place, where will he then be instead?

"Wo is er denn" has more the sense of "wherever could he be".

As the difference is vers slicht, this could also be considered as hair-splitting, I would agree with your German wife that you can use both.

Would any native (German) speakers like to comment on this ?

Regards

Thanks for your thoughts Laura77; my German wife has the same problem that I do when trying to explain something in English . . . I know what is right, but not always necessarily why :-)

Any other input would b emost welcome.

Hi @all,

Yes, I would agree - thisthis is definitely one of those tricky issues, here a suggestion (IMO it's easier to give examples than to try and explain)

Wo ist er denn = Where IS he? (d.h. wo ist er überhaupt)
Wo ist er dann = Where is he THEN? (d.h. wenn er nicht hier/da ist, wo ist er DANN ?
