El que desee presentarse como independiente, puede hacerlo elevando una petición con firmas que la apoyen. En el Reino Unido, las elecciones generales deben celebrarse por ley, cada cinco años. Sin embargo el Primer Ministro (prime minister) puede convocar a elecciones anticipadas si parece que tiene buenas posibilidades de triunfar. Siempre tienen lugar un jueves. En el Reino Unido hay 659 circunscripciones electorales (constituencies), cada una de las cuales elige un parlamentario MP - Member of Parliament. El sistema electoral que se aplica es el first-past-the-post system, es decir que se resulta elegido por mayoría relativa. El líder del partido que obtiene el mayor número de escaños, pasa a ser el Primer Ministro y forma el nuevo gobierno.
