Asbest ist eine natürliche mineralische Faser, die aufgrund ihrer mechanischen und chemischen Beständigkeit in mehr als 3000 Produkten verarbeitet wurde.
Problematisch an diesem Werkstoff ist jedoch sein Zerfall in lungengängige Fasern, die, in hoher Konzentration eingeatmet, nach einer Inkubationszeit von 15 - 20 Jahren, zu Lungenkrebs und Asbestose führt.
Aus diesem Grund wurde die Verwendung von Asbest 1993 in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland vollständig verboten.
