Im Jahr 1881 entdeckte der Astronom Simon Newcomb, dass in seinen Logarithmentafeln die ersten Seiten mehr abgenutzt waren als die letzten.
Daraus schlussfolgerte er, dass die Ziffer 1 weitaus häufiger in natürlich vorkommenden Daten auftritt als es die anderen Ziffern tun.

In 1881 the astronomer Simon Newcomb found that first pages of logarithm tables were more worn out than the latter ones.
He concluded that the digit 1 occurs more often in “natural” data than any other digit.
