The Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellites monitor the Earth weather 24/7 from the geostationary orbit.
Each 15 minutes the satellites provide a set of 12 images from different spectral channels.

Dafür benutzten die Wissenschaftler Daten der geostationären Meteosat Second Generation ( MSG ) Satelliten, die in Kooperation von EUMETSAT und ESA betrieben werden. An Bord der MSG Satelliten befindet sich das Instrument SEVIRI, welches die Erde in zwölf Spektralbereichen beobachtet.
Mit den Infrarotkanälen dieses Instruments konnten sie die Zirrusbewölkung über dem Atlantik alle 15 Minuten mit etwa 5 km räumlicher Auflösung über acht Jahre messen.

Within the project ICOS, this method will be extended by incorporating satellite observations by Meteosat SEVIRI into the IPT optimal estimation framework for the additional retrieval of cloud microphysics (effective radius, optical thickness) and cloud radiation budget.
In addition SEVIRI measurements will be exploited to provide auxiliary information on a) the history of the cloud observed at the super site (life time, microphysical development, environment) and b) the representativeness of the cloud for the cloud field around the site.
