Die Kapelle wurde um das Jahr 1330 errichtet und diente ursprünglich mit dem ihr angeschlossenen Hospital den Pilgern nach Santiago de Compostela als Unterkunft.
Im Laufe der Zeit verlor sie ihren religiösen Charakter.

Daher baute ein deutsches Ehepaar, wohl Kaufleute, im Jahre 1118 mit eigenen Mitteln ein Hospital, in dem Pilger aus dem deutschen Sprachraum Unterkunft fanden, sowie eine Kapelle, die der Gottesmutter Maria geweiht wurde.
Mit dem Verlust von Jerusalem 1187 ging dieses Hospital unter.
