Für Bücher und Urkunden verwendete man jetzt ausschließlich Pergament, alltägliche Dinge und Notizen ritzte man in Wachstafeln.
Das Blatt wendete sich im laufe des 13. Jahrhunderts zu Gunsten des kostengünstiger und vorerst aus alten Textilfasern hergestelltem Papier.
