Hi,

This may seem an odd (basic?) question, but can anyone explain what grammatical gender is for, i.e. what value it adds? Having the different cases helps understand the role of nouns within a sentence, but gender?

Certainly as a learner of German, the genders just seem to add complication. The fact that words seem to have gender randomly assigned means that it doesn’t add any information about the word or aid understanding.

Thanks in advance,

hk

Hey hk,

I don't really have an answer for you, but I can say that I often wonder the same thing about grammatical gender. I kind of like the and a(n) for each and every noun.

If it makes you feel any better, Japanese doesn't have grammatical gender... But that doesn't make that language any easier.

Cheers,
Yama

Hallo HeidrunKollider,

According to Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grammatical_gender#Useful_roles_of_grammatical_gender);

1. In a language with explicit inflections for gender, it is easy to express the natural gender of animate beings.
2. Grammatical gender "can be a valuable tool of disambiguation", rendering clarity about antecedents.
3. In literature, gender can be used to "animate and personify inanimate nouns".

fredbär

According to Gender, Language and New Literacy (Thüne et al);

“In Proto-Indo-European languages, gender (as opposed to sex) started out as a classification system for nouns with similar phonological properties, particularly with similar endings.”

So, (if I’ve understood this correctly) it appears that words were originally classified according to how they sounded. I suppose this is the basis for some of the German ‘rules’ on gender; e.g. feminine words ending in –heit, -keit, -ung, etc.
