I’m trying to translate ‘Es sind die kleinen Dinge, die ihm gefallen’?

I think it should be ‘It is the simple things that please him’, but I don’t really understand why it’s ‘Es sind...’ and not ‘Sie sind...’ or 'Es ist...'

Thanks in advance,

Re: Es sind

your translation is correct, in the german sentence the "sind" corresponds to the "dinge", which are plural. the "es" is not used as a pronoun but rather to express quantity.

Hallo adman,

In order to change the emphasis in a German sentence, they sometimes use a form which introduces a 2nd dummy subject, ‘es’, but the verbs agree with the original/real subject (the simple things).

In English, we use a cleft construction (‘it is... that’) to do the same thing.

I don’t think either construction is particularly logical.

Hope that helps,
