- According to the 2000 Census, Brazil has 701,000 indigenous people, equivalent to 0.4% of the entire population. There are 587 Indian reserves, totalling 101.84m hectares (11.92% of Brazilian territory). They are distributed among approximately 215 ethnicities, which communicate in 180 languages and dialects (divided into three branches: Tupi, Macro-Ge, and Arawak) in nearly the entire country. The greatest problems that the indigenous peoples face are invasions and attempts to economically exploit their lands by farmers, squatters, loggers, and miners. White men have introduced diseases into indigenous communities and destroyed the environment and indigenous cultural traditions.
