Der Salzdom besteht aus salinaren Gesteinen, insbesondere Gips, Ton und Steinsalz.

Das Projekt startete 1997 mit dem sogenannten Early Oil Project (EOP) und der Plattform Chirag und wurde 2008 mit den beiden Tiefsee-Plattformen Guneshli abgeschlossen.

For four years, Dillinger Hütte has continuously supplied heavy plate for an entire group of steel-platform islands located to the south-east of Baku, in the Caspian Sea - the astonishing total of 172,000 tonnes for oil rigs and pipelines.
These offshore structures are used for exploitation of the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli oilfield, started in 1997 with the so-called Early Oil Project (EOP), as well as the Chirag production platform.
