Das DIN nimmt als technischer Regelsetzer im Rahmen der technischen Sachnormung auch eine Ordnungsfunktion für die Terminologie der technischen Fachsprachen wahr.
Für diese Aufgabe ist jeder Normenausschuss auf seinem Arbeitsgebiet, in Grundsatzfragen der Normenausschuss Terminologie (NAT) zuständig.
Die Arbeit des NAT richtet sich sowohl auf die grundlegende Bedeutung der Fachsprachen für die gesamte Normung als auch auf die Werkzeuge der Terminologiearbeit, Übersetzungspraxis und Lexikographie.
