- Formé des mots Ebony (ébène) et phonics (phonique), l'Ébonique est une variante simplifiée de l'anglais parlé par certains Afro-Américains. Ce langage considéré comme argotique est cependant reconnu par certains comme une langue à part entière avec son propre vocabulaire et sa propre syntaxe. Des écoles américaines l'acceptent comme langue de communication et dans les travaux écrits de leurs élèves, mais beaucoup d'entre eux ont renoncé à l'utiliser afin de ne pas gâcher leurs chances professionnelles.
