- El Royal Observatory (observatorio astronómico) de Greenwich fue construido en 1675 para obtener datos exactos sobre la posición de las estrellas con vista a la creación de cartas de navegación. El Greenwich meridian (meridiano de Greenwich) no se fijó oficialmente como el grado cero de longitud con validez universal hasta 1884. Las 24 franjas horarias del planeta se fijan a partir de la hora local del meridiano que es conocida como Greenwich Mean Time o Universal Time.
