Prof Fähnrich worked from 1979 to 1981 as a scientific assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) in Stuttgart.
From 1981 to 2000 he worked on the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO), where he finally acted as director for the working groups on Information Systems, Services Science, Software Engineering and E-Business.

Von 1981 bis 2000 war er Mitarbeiter am Fraunhofer Institut für Arbeitswirtschaft und Organisation (IAO) unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Hans-Jörg Bullinger, dem agierenden Präsidenten der Fraunhofer Gesellschaft.
