Abgeleitet vom Althochdeutschen „ Hansa “, was so viel wie Kriegerschar und Gefolge bedeutet, steht der Begriff für einen Städtebund, der die Handelsinteressen der Gemeinschaft vertrat und gegenseitigen Schutz für seine Mitglieder bot.
Wirksamste Waffe dieses Bundes war die " Verhansung ", die Handelsblockade eines Hafens oder eines Landes.

The most effective weapon of this community was the so called “ Verhansung ”, the trade blockade of a port or country.
