1942 waren die Verbände schon so geschrumpft, daß die Regia Aeronautica nur noch einen statt der zwei Torpedos montierte, um wenigstens den Schein einer intakten Luftstreitkraft zu erwirken.
Zu Kriegsende standen nur noch 36 flugfähige SM.79 verstreut auf verschiedenen Flugplätzen.
