Mögliche Anwendungen von BR werden z. B. in der optischen Datenverarbeitung gesehen ( als Speicher oder optisches Schaltelement ) oder in der Sicherheitstechnik zur Herstellung von fälschungssicheren Materialien.
BR wird nicht in reiner Form verwendet, sondern als sogenannte Purpurmembran in Assoziation mit Membranlipiden.
Bisher wurde BR nur in kleineren Mengen im Labormaßstab mit einer relativ aufwändigen Präparation hergestellt.
