Den Anlass für die Wallfahrt nach Riffian gibt eine aus Stuck gefertigte Skulptur der Mater Dolorosa, der schmerzensreichen Mutter, in der Mitte des Altars über dem Tabernakel.
Erstmals erwähnt wurde eine Kirche zur Verehrung der Schmerzensmutter im Jahr 1310, als die Marienverehrung von Riffian offiziell von vier Bischöfen anerkannt wurde.
