Bei einem leptonischen Zerfall (das W-Boson zerfällt in ein Lepton und das entsprechende Neutrino) wird im Detektor ein isoliertes Lepton beobachtet, bei einem hadronischen Zerfall (das W-Boson zerfällt in ein Quark und ein Antiquark) zwei Teilchenjets.
Das nebenstehende Bild zeigt den reinhadronischen Zerfall eines W-Paares im OPAL-Detektor bei einer Schwerpunktsenergie von 172 GeV.

In a leptonic decay (the W decays to a lepton and its antineutrino) an isolated lepton is observed in the detector.A hadronic decay (the W decays to an quark-antiquark pair) results in two observable jets in the detector.
The picture shows a purely hadronic decay of a W-boson pair at a center-of-mass energy of 172 GeV in the OPAL detector.
