Bei einem abbildenden Röntgenmikroskop ( Imaging Transmission X-ray Microscope , ITXM ) wird die Probe vollständig ausgeleuchtet und das ganze Bild in Transmission von einer CCD-Kamera aufgenommen .

Im Raster-Transmissionsröntgen... ( engl. Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscope, STXM ) wird die Probe rasterartig mit den Röntgenpulsen abgetastet und die transmittierte Intensität von einem Photodetektor gemessen.

Hierfür sind von der Abteilung entsprechende Experimentiereinrichtungen für Absorptions- und Streutechniken entwickelt worden, die am Speicherring BESSY II in Berlin und bei ANKA in Karlsruhe zum Einsatz kommen.

Bei BESSY II betreibt die Abteilung außerdem das Röntgenmikroskop MAXY ­ MUS ( Magnetic X-raY Microscope with UHV Spectroscopy ) , das eine einzigartige Kombination von lateraler und temporaler Auflösung bis zu 15 nm und 10 psec bei gleichzeitig hohem magnetischen Kontrast liefert .

Soft x-rays are produced by a synchrontron radiation source.

Therefore, experimental equipment for absorption- and scattering techniques have been developed in the department, which are attached to the storage rings BESSY II in Berlin and ANKA at Karlsruhe.

At BESSY II the department runs the unique x-ray microscope MAXYMUS ( Magnetic X-raY Microscope with UHV Spectroscopy ) , which provides a combination of lateral and temporal resolution down to 15 nm and 10 psec with high magnetic contrast .
