Patente a punti Info
- Following reform of the Italian highway code, each driving licence is now given an initial value of 20 points, from which points are deducted if traffic offences are committed. For example, for the more serious offences (overtaking on a bend, drink driving, or driving while under the effect of drugs) 10 points are deducted; going through a red light costs you 6 points; while parking in an area reserved for public transport costs 2 points. Once the number of infringements committed has reduced the initial number of points to zero, the licence is withdrawn and the holder has to re-take his or her driving test. Drivers with the worst records are required to undergo courses of “re-education”. The points system is also applied to foreign citizens who are passing through Italy: the penalties are totted up and filed in a special register.
