In der 1976 vom Autor stark, aber selbst gekürzten und gelesenen Romanfassung für den DDR-Rundfunk und das Label Litera beim VEB Deutsche Schallplatten fiel vor allem der lakonische und doch eindringliche, kaum dramatisierte Ton des Vortrags auf.
Dennoch liegt gerade in dieser Sprechweise und in der Unangreifbarkeit dieser Stimme die ganze Tragödie des Zivilisationsbruches: diese Stimme ist ein Beweis, die erinnerte Präsenz.
Als der Münchner Hörverlag im Sommer 2007 zum 70. Geburtstag Jurek Beckers das Hörbuch Jakob der Lügner auf CD herausgab, fand dieses Ereignis auch eine unerwartet starke Resonanz in den Feuilletons.
