- A form of Buenos Aires slang that originated in the underworld. It draws on many languages, including Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, and several African languages. It has found its way into popular songs and theater. Lunfardo words in standard colloquial speech are: morfar (to eat), güita (money), and mina (woman).

- A Mexican cowboy or cowgirl skilled in horsemanship. The traditional charro costume is very elaborate and trimmed with silver. A man's outfit consists of a high-crowned, wide-brimmed hat, tight trousers, a white shirt, waistcoat and short jacket. A woman's outfit is a similar but with a long, wide skirt.
Charros originated charrerías, the culture associated with horse-riding and rodeo skills. They also take part in festivals known as charreadas.

- A musical drama consisting of alternating passages of dialogue, songs, choruses, and dancing, that originated in Spain in the seventeenth century. Its name comes from the Zarzuela palace, Madrid. It is also popular in Latin America.
Zarzuela declined in the eighteenth century but revived in the early nineteenth century. The revived zarzuela dealt with more popular themes and was called género chico. A more serious version developed, known as género grande.
