Der Freundeskreis des Botanischen Gartens wurde 1998 gegründet.
Sein Ziel ist es, den unter Botanikern weithin bekannten Garten der Mainzer Universität in seiner Entwicklung zu fördern und ihn und seine Inhalte auch der Bevölkerung näher zu bringen.
Inzwischen hat der Verein mehr als 90 Mitglieder und bereits einiges bewirkt:

Die Kourotrophos kam im Jahre 1870 als Tausch vom Landesmuseum Joanneum in die Archäologischen Sammlungen, das im Inventarbuch vermerkte Erwerbsdatum 1862 bezieht sich wohl auf den Ankauf der Skulpturen aus der Sammlung des Botanikers und Zypern-Reisenden Franz Unger.
Dieser erwarb 1862 an die 80 Kalksteinskulpturen in Larnaka und gab sie dem Joanneum weiter.

In 1870 the Kourotrophos came from the Landemuseum Joanneum to the Archaeological collections to Graz as a result of exchange. The acquisition date of 1862, which is registered in the inventory book refers probably to the purchase of the sculptures out of the collection of the botanist and traveler to Cyprus Franz Unger.
He bought the 80 sculptures made of limestone in Larnaka in 1862 and handed them over to the Joanneum.

Um das babylonische Sprachgewirr der Namensgebung von Arten zu umgehen und die verschiedenen Lebewesen systematisch zu ordnen, entwickelte der schwedische Botaniker Carl von Linné ein hierarchisches System, in das alle bekannten Arten eingeordnet und mit einem eindeutigen Namen versehen wurden und das – trotz einiger Schwächen – heute noch verwendet wird.
Grundlage des Systems ist die einzig natürlich vorkommende Einheit – die Art.
