Coudenhove-Kalergi war der Pionier der europäischen Integration und hat in seinen Werken das Konzept einer Föderation der europäischen Staaten propagiert.

The prize bears the name of Count Richard Nicolaus von Coudenhove-Kalergi (1894-1972), a philosopher, diplomat, publisher and founder of the Pan-European movement (1923). Coudenhove-Kalergi was the pioneer of European integration and propagated the notion of a federation of European states in his works.
The Prize winners since 2000 have included the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Angela Merkel (2010) and Vaira Vike-Freiberga, the President of Latvia (2006).
