www.opuntiadelsur.deEin Sympodium hingegen ist aus Seitenachsen verschiedener Generationen zusammengesetzt ( Sympodialglieder ), und zwar deshalb, weil das Apikalmeristem eines jeden Sympodialglieds abstirbt oder sich zu einer Blüte, einem Dorn oder einer Ranke differenziert und dadurch seine Wachstumsfähigkeit verliert.
Die jeweilige Sproßspitze wird dann von einer Seitenachse - dem nächsten Sympodialglied - übergipfelt.
Setzt dabei nur eine der Seitenachsen die ursprüngliche Hauptachse fort, resultiert ein Monochasium, das mitunter nur schwer von einem Monopodium zu unterscheiden ist.
