In most subjects, the number of candidates exceeds the number of places available. The successful agregé/-ée is then committed to five years of service in either a state school or a university.

Places are much sought after as they are widely considered to guarantee more promising career prospects than the standard university institutions. Many grandes écoles specialize in particular disciplines or fields of study, e.g. ENA, Sciences Po, etc.
