- A corps of the Italian army, founded in 1814, with the tasks of guaranteeing the safety of citizens and their property and ensuring that State laws are observed. As well as being a military police force and responsible for public safety, the carabinieri also function as judiciary police. They are much more widespread throughout Italian territory (even having a presence in small villages) than the Police.
