- The fiestas de San Fermín, Pamplona's patron saint, are the festival for which the Navarrese capital has become world-famous. It begins on July 6 with the txupinazo, the firing of a rocket in the main square. The bull-running, or encierro, starts at 8 a.m. the following day and takes place every day until July 14. The bulls that will fight that evening are released, and those who wish to, usually young men, run in front of them. Accidents are frequent.

- A spectacular yearly festival in La Tirana, Chile. The high point is on July 16, the day of La Virgen del Carmen, Chile's patron saint. Many thousands of people come to the village to watch three days of non-stop dancing by costumed dancers before a richly adorned statue of the Virgin. Some of the dances are fantastic, others are religious allegories, such as the diabladas, performed by dancers wearing devil masks.

- A fiesta in Spain can be a day of neighborhood celebrations, a larger event for a town or city, or a national holiday, to commemorate a saint's day or some historical event. For example, Madrid has the fiestas de San Isidro, in honor of its patron saint. Other famous Spanish holidays include the Fallas in Valencia, the Sanfermines in Pamplona, and the Feria de Sevilla.
They can last for a week or more, during which everyday life is often interrupted. Classes in schools may stop and banks, stores, and post offices alter their opening hours. There are often bullfights and dancing to live bands and people eat and drink plentifully.
