- Ce sont les huit universités les plus anciennes et les plus renommées de la côte est des États-Unis (Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Brown, Princeton, Pennsylvania). Elles doivent ce nom collectif au lierre qui pousse (ou est censé pousser) sur les murs des bâtiments anciens.
