Oxford-Hachette French Dictionary
-
- An agreement signed by the British and French governments in 1904 aiming to settle long-standing disputes between the two powers in territories such as Morocco, Egypt, Siam, Madagascar, the New Hebrides, West and Central Africa, and Newfoundland. It was motivated by a shared fear of Germany and in turn led to the Triple Entente between Britain, France and the Russian Empire in 1907. It represented a historic shift from conflict to rapprochement and negotiated agreements.
